Coast and Marine

The Mallala Coastal area provides a recreational outlet for both locals and visitors alike. Fishermen are often observed wading in the shallows looking for a catch of whiting or groups of people looking for a fun day out are often seen with rake in hand searching for our famous Blue Swimmer Crab.   The Mallala coastline is also a place of high environmental importance. Our beaches, tidal creeks and sabkahs provide suitable habitat for thousands of migratory and resident shorebirds and is an important terminal summer feeding area the migratory shorebirds.  Large areas of saltmarsh and mangroves are important for areas for fish, reptiles and birds such as the rare Samphire Thornbill.

Our Coast is bounded by the Upper Gulf St Vincent Marine Park which contains 4 Sanctuary zones 2 of which are located close to our shores in the Light River Delta and just north of Parham bordering the Proof Range exclusion zone.

The Adelaide Plains Council recognises the importance of the coastal area and as such in partnership with the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board hosts a Coast Estuary and Marine Office responsible for the management of environmental assets along our coastline.
