Illegal Dumping
Items deliberately left on a road, verge, or public property like a park or reserve without Council’s permission are considered illegally dumped.
Illegal dumping can have a negative impact on the environment and animals, cause accidents, pollute water and create a fire risk. People or businesses caught illegally dumping can receive significant penalties, and even be imprisoned for serious offences. This can be much more expensive than taking general waste items to our Resource Recovery Centre.
Report it
If you find illegally dumped rubbish, or see someone dumping it, please report it to us. We will investigate to see if offenders can be identified and either fined or prosecuted under the Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016.
Hazardous materials or rubbish that presents a significant safety risk will be removed as soon as possible. Sometimes it may require the engagement of accredited specialists (to remove asbestos, for example) and this can take time.
When reporting to Council, please try to let us know:
- if it presents a hazard to road users or pedestrians
- where it happened (nearest crossroad)
- the day, date and time
- description of the person/people involved
- description of the vehicle and/or registration number
- the amount and type of waste.
