Council builds flood resilience in Two Wells
Construction to build a levee protecting the Two Wells township from flooding is about to begin, fully funded by the Australian Government’s National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program and developer contributions.
The levee will be constructed around the east and south of Two Wells to protect the township from floodwaters, designed to cater for all storms and floods up to, and including, a 100-year flood event.
The $2.02 million project will provide much needed protection to residents living in the Two Wells township, building resilience and preparing for future natural disasters.
Without a levee, many parts of the Two Wells township will be affected by floodwaters from Salt Creek, Gawler River and Light River during 100-year flood events or major storms.
With the design completed in early 2024 and the development application now lodged, Council expects to begin construction in October, with works completed by the end of the year. The levee will be constructed in stages starting at the intersection of Magnolia Boulevard and Gawler Road, and following Secomb Road through to the levee’s end at Port Wakefield Highway.
Construction works will have minimal impact, with occasional traffic control on Gawler Road and Old Port Wakefield Road when workers are completing those sections. Most of the levee construction is on Council road reserves and will not require access to, or impact on, private property.
More information about the project is available on Council’s website.
