Information or Briefing Sessions
Information or briefing sessions enhance Council decision-making by providing opportunity for Council or committee members to be better informed on issues, and seek further clarification, before making decisions at a formal meeting.
These sessions are held in accordance with section 90A of the Local Government Act.
About these sessions
Information or briefing sessions are a forum where Council and committee members, Council administration and other invited individuals and/or organisations gather to discuss matters of relevance to Council to provide opportunity to enhance decision-making. These sessions provide opportunity for Council and committee members to be better informed on issues, and seek further clarification, before making decisions at a formal meeting.
Decisions are not made at information or briefing sessions. Decisions by Council can only be made at formal meetings.
Council revoked its Community Engagement Policy–Public Forums and approved the practice of publishing details for information or briefing sessions (open to the community) in advance on 28 October 2024.
An information or briefing session is conducted by or on behalf of Council or the CEO for Council and committees members. The sessions may involve discussion of a matter that is, or is intended to be, part of the agenda for a formal Council or committee meeting. These sessions are generally chaired by Council administration.
Council’s meeting procedures do not apply to information or briefing sessions, and no minutes are recorded.
Information or briefing sessions are generally open to the community to observe if the matter to be discussed at an information or briefing session will, or is intended to be, on the agenda for a formal Council or committee meeting, unless there are genuine reasons that require it to be closed to the public.
The community can attend open sessions to observe and cannot take part in the discussion unless specifically invited to do so.
An information or briefing session may be closed to the community to allow attendees to receive, discuss, or consider information of a matter, subject to an order being made under section 90(3) of the Local Government Act. This order can be made by Council or the CEO.
Please note: if all topics for discussion are of a confidential nature, the information or briefing sessions will not be open to the community. If 1 or more of the topics are confidential, they will be considered at the end of the agenda allowing the community to leave before the discussion.
