Milestone reached in the undergrounding of power in the main street of Two Wells

A major milestone has been reached in the upgrade of the Two Wells main street (Old Port Wakefield Road), with powerlines and stobie poles disappearing from the streetscape to improve the public realm.

Power was successfully moved underground in early 2025. Following removal of the old infrastructure, 21 new heritage-style LED street lights will be installed throughout June and July.

The $3.8 million project has seen Council work in collaboration with the State Government’s Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC), that contributed $2.4 million. An allocation of $345,459 was also made through the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

“Following the successful delivery of our Village Green a few years back, the next phase of our enhancement works being the powerline project is nearing completion,’ said James Miller, Chief Executive Officer.

“As with all projects APC undertake, a large percentage of the project is funded via external sources, in this case, the state government through the PLEC program. Put simply, our Council prides itself on project delivery which isn’t heavily reliant on public funds. PLEC is case in point,’

“With Council taking on a large portion of the capital works, we estimate that savings to the tune of $320,000 will be realised for our community,’

“This is a fantastic result for our community and comes on the back of 4/5ths ($889,000) of the Village Green being funded externally and 100% of our $2.05 million township levee being funded externally.”

Council anticipates the erection of new street lighting will commence in late June with heritage-style street lights similar to those on Meaney Drive chosen. Diligent planning will ensure that banners and power for community events will be able to be accommodated once this project is delivered.

In closing, Council wishes to thank both the State and Federal Governments for their significant financial contributions towards this transformative public realm project.
